The Breece Hill Information Storage and Retrieval Architecture (iStoRATM) is designed to deliver a seamless integration of removable storage, NAS technology, and management software, to meet the needs of Small-to-Medium-Business (SMB) Customers for data replication, backup, archiving, and recovery.

THe iStoRA 4000 series integrates up to 1.5 TB of Serial-ATA disk; up to 3 TB of uncompressed removable tape storage in a 1x10 autoloader; and an Intel server motherboard with Gigabit-Ethernet connectivity; all in single easy-to-deploy 4u-high rackmountable enclosure.

Each appliance ships pre-loaded with software to manage file replication from external clients and file migration between disk and tape.

When people say data recovery, it can mean many things. File recovery, Database recovery, or Server recovery. While restoring an individual file is an easy task, what about the complete recovery of a server and its data? And what if the disk volumes and/or data for the operating system itself are unavailable? This is when you go from a recovery, to a disaster recovery. While a disaster may evoke visions of hurricanes and man-made events, it is more likely that a disaster will be isolated, and caused by a hardware failure or complete data corruption such as a virus that infects a server. In this situation, you must start from scratch.

 

Starting from scratch doesn’t sound like a good thing when it involves business critical data such as web or application servers. This is why Yosemite developed the Yosemite TapeWare® DR agent that provides bare metal recovery of a server. With this agent, you can reboot the system, restore the operating system as it was configured and recover all of the associated data.Restore versus Recovery
By design all backup software products must support a restore operation. The most basic of products only support full restore, but many offer granularity through an explorer or tree-like navigation view that enables selections to be made at the file, directory or volume level. Some products even offer the precision to redirect and rename files or to sort through multiple versions and select a specific instance of a file for restore. The restore concept is ideal for quickly replacing corrupted or accidentally deleted data, but falls short when it comes to complete data loss due to a virus or device failure.

Without a functioning operating system on which to run your backup software you have little hope of performing a file level restore until you have repaired the system, reinstalled the OS and reloaded your backup software. This is where the true advantage of disaster recovery software becomes apparent. Without the bare metal Disaster Recovery Agent for Yosemite TapeWare you could easily spend four to six hours installing software applications and configuring settings that TapeWare can fully automate.

The Yosemite TapeWare Disaster Recovery Agent is a single solution that supports true multi-platform disaster recovery across a very diverse list of platforms. Currently supported platforms include Windows 98/ME, XP, NT4, 2000 and Server 2003, Novell NetWare 4.2, 5.1, 6.x, Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, and many others.

How it Works
Disaster recovery begins with preparation. After installing the TapeWare Disaster Recovery Agent you will begin by creating DR boot media and performing a full system backup. Three types of bootable media are supported on most operating systems; including an .ISO CD image, boot floppies, HP OBDR, and Compaq DRTape compatible tape drives.
In the event of major data loss, the recovery process can be started by simply inserting the boot media and restarting the system. Unlike competing products that merely script a reinstallation of the OS, TapeWare fully restores your OS and applications to the point of your last backup. This is done by first loading a basic operating system, device drivers, and the utilities needed to access your tape drive. TapeWare then partitions and formats your hard disk before it begins restoring your OS and applications. Finally TapeWare will reboot your system and start up in your native OS, allowing you to apply incremental database backups.

When compared to competitive solutions and manual recovery processes, the TapeWare Disaster Recovery Agent has been shown to reduce your recovery time by half and as much as 2/3 in independent tests.

Virtual Tape & Virtual Media

 

MediaScribe's primary functions of, computer media duplication, conversion and virtual media technology (VMT) allows a Records and Data Storage facility to offer many new services to their storage customers. The Virtual Media Technology (VMT) capability will convert most computer tape or disk media to a virtual image to be transmitted electronically or archived to longer lasting optical media or disk storage arrays.

An example of using VMT is where numerous lower capacity tapes can be stored, as identical data, on a new technology tape of much higher capacity. Each tape can be recalled as identical to the input data.

A calculation could be made thus: Where at least 600 full (150Mb) Open Reel tapes could be put on to One LTO tape. Of course you could also store the tape images on Disc, or Optical media (MO, CD, DVD).
